Professor Leon Straker 2018
Professor Leon Straker has been researching the physical implications of children’s use of technology for over 20 years. This has included examining desktop and laptop computers, electronic games, tablet computers and smart phones using large surveys, qualitative interviews with families, home and school interventions and biomechanics laboratory studies. Implications for posture, neck and back pain, muscle activity, bone density, energy expenditure, obesity, mental health, vision and motor coordination have been explored.
Leon is a John Curtin Distinguished Professor at Curtin University and the Scientific Director of the Raine Study. He has held two consecutive National Health and Medical Research Council Senior Research Fellowships. He has been an investigator on research grants worth over $16 million and had continuous NHMRC grant funding as a chief investigator since 2000. He has published over 230 peer-reviewed journal papers, which have been cited over 5,000 times. Leon is passionate about providing high quality evidence to help families and professionals working with children encourage wise use of technology by children.
